William Afton (also known as The Purple Guy, The Purple Man, The Killer, The Murderer) with the release of FFPS, William Afton.) is the overarching antagonist in Five Nights at Freddy's 2, Five Nights at Freddy's 3 and Five Nights at Freddy's 4.

Human[]

From 1982 up until mid-1985, William Afton was fat and flushed with health. He has glassy, dead eyes and fair skin with a ruddy complexion.

In 1987, William Afton was tall and gaunt. His skin was sallow and saggy and he had deep bags under his sunken eyes. He also had poorly shaven face and his eyes looked a little unfocused. He wore a grubby security uniform that was torn in a few places along with a badge. He had scars all over his body, some include two scars that mirrored each other were on the nape of his neck that disappeared into his hair and two croissant-shaped scars on the side of his neck, matching each other.

Springtrap[]

Springtrap is a rotten, withered, rabbit animatronic. The suit's fur, which was once a bright yellow, is now a drab olive colour, due to the blood and age. The suit is covered in tears, exposing Afton's mangled corpse within. Springtrap has a large, permanent grin and is missing half of his right ear.

Inside of the suit contains William Afton's impaled, mummified corpse, having had dozens of sharp springlocks puncture his flesh and organs, it trapped him inside of the suit. His skull was drilled into and his mouth was speared open. His eyeballs were popped out of the sockets. In-game, the corpse simply appears as an endoskeleton with strings of flesh wrapped around the metal frame. This is because Scott Cawthon felt that he didn't need to fully model the corpse, as it wouldn't even be seen during gameplay. He provided a more detailed description of how Afton's corpse appears in The Twisted Ones novel and made a proper corpse in Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria Simulator in the form of Scraptrap.

The suit was once the secondary attraction of Fredbear's Family Diner. It went by the name of Spring Bonnie. It was a rabbit springlock animatronic with bright yellow fur, a purple bowtie, and a two black buttons near its neck-area.

Personality[]

Mr. Afton[]

William Afton is a sadistic and depraved serial killer. He shows no remorse when it comes to murdering his victims, all of whom were young children. He cared for nobody but himself and was an abusive and neglectful parent, having ignored Crying Child's torment from Michael Afton, and sending the Circus Baby animatronic (who is haunted by Elizabeth Afton) down into his underground rental facility to be tortured and experimented on, knowing full-well his daughter possessed it.

William is rather a master of manipulation, convincing them to believe anything he says. He does things that would only benefit himself and nobody else. He also seems to be an alcoholic and was banned from Jr's, implying that he would get incredibly violent and angry when drunk. Afton is an evil individual with no regrets for what he has done.

William Afton is a calm, manipulative smooth-talker, being able to convince anyone of almost anything. When he was around people, he was similar to Santa Claus in the sense that he was jolly, good-natured and affable. This is likely just a façade however put on by William to trick people into believing he is to be trusted.

Afton appeared to mentally unwell, as he had an unhealthy obsession about Henry and the animatronics during the time he was alive in his human form. He owned multiple journals which he filled with passages about Henry that varied from mild jealousy to near worship. It's likely that Afton was jealous of Henry's engineering skills as well as his happy family, giving him a reason as to why he killed Charlie.

William Afton is proven to be quite intelligent, as he was financially shrewd and knew his way around business, was able to design complex machines, and found a way to cheat death. He is also confident, determined, and scientific, as he studied remnant in order to become immortal. It is indicated that he has a fear of death, the most likely reason as to why he would want to become immortal was so he would avoid going to Hell and pay for his crimes.

Springtrap[]

Once Afton became Springtrap and was released into Fazbear's Fright, he was silent yet incredibly deadly. He had wanted nothing more but to inflict pain on others and would stop at nothing to do so.

Story[]

Fredbear's Family Diner, Charlie's death, and The Bite of '83[]

William Afton was a businessman who resided in Hurricane, Utah. He had a best friend named Henry Emily. one day, the two opened Fredbear’s Family Diner in 1982. William took care of the financial side while Henry built the animatronics, having invented the "springlock suits", suits that can double as an animatronic and a wearable costume for performers to wear.

William would regularly abuse and neglect his children. This would lead his oldest son Michael Afton to bully his younger brother, Crying Child. William decides to make a plushie of Fredbear imbedded with a walkie talkie to manipulate and control the Crying Child.

One rainy night in 1983, William would drive up to Fredbear’s Family Diner and find Henry’s daughter, Charlotte Emily, locked outside of the building crying. William murdered Charlie outside of the diner and drove away from the scene, leaving her corpse near a dumpster. The Puppet, a character from the restaurant, came outside and hugged Charlie’s corpse, Charlie then possessed the puppet from then on.

Soon after, the Crying Child gets killed in an incident that is now known as The Bite of '83, involving one of the springlock suits. Michael and his friends put the Crying Child into the Fredbear animatronic’s mouth, which bit down and crushed the child's head. The child was rushed to the hospital, and during his final moments, the Fredbear Plushie (which was subsequently possessed by an unnamed spirit) promised to put him back together. He attempted to do so by guiding him through the Flipside, a spiritual realm between life and death, in hopes of finding and putting together the fragmented parts of his memories.

After The Bite of '83 occurred, Fredbear's Family Diner is closed.

Freddy Fazbear's Pizza and The Missing Children Incident[]

Shortly before The Bite of '83 occurred, William and Henry had opened a second location, Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza, to compliment the diner.

Everything was fine for a while until two years later on the night of June 26th, 1985, William Afton wore the Spring Bonnie suit and lured five children named Gabriel, Jeremy, Susie, Fritz, and Cassidy into the saferoom of Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. He murdered them in cold blood and stuffed their corpses into the animatronic suits of Freddy Fazbear, Bonnie the Rabbit, Chica the Chicken, Foxy the Pirate Fox, and Fredbear (Golden Freddy). However, he was caught on camera and charged for the crime. He was let go due to a lack of evidence. The Puppet would return and give life to the children's souls, allowing them to possess the animatronics.

The bodies of The Missing Children were never found and after some complaints about the smell of the animatronics, the restaurant is closed due to health violations and Henry sells the company to unknown buyers.

Circus Baby's Pizza World and Circus Baby's Entertainment and Rental[]

For more info see: William Afton

After the pizzeria's closure, William creates Afton Robotics, LLC and builds a set of new robots, these being the Funtime Animatronics, designed to abduct and kill children. Once they are created, William builds a restaurant called Circus Baby's Pizza World.

At a private party before opening day, William's daughter, Elizabeth Afton, becomes interested in Circus Baby. She wants to play with the robot but William warns her not to. She disobeys him and ends up getting clawed and crushed inside the stomach of Baby, This prompted Afton to swiftly shut down further development of the restaurant using a coverup involving a gas leak.

After the cancelling the grand opening of Circus Baby's Pizza World, William opens up a rental service called Circus Baby's Entertainment and Rental. The service allows parents to rent the Funtime Animatronics for backyard birthday parties and such.

Freddy Fazbear's Pizza II and The Bite of '87[]

In November of 1987, a new Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza establishment opens. They feature the brand new Toy Animatronics that have facial recognition built into them so could detect predators from a criminal database (as to prevent any more children going missing). The old animatronics from the previous pizzeria have been scrapped and thrown into the back. Here, Afton takes a job as a night guard under the fake name, "Dave Miller". He spends a week in the restaurant but notices the animatronics moving. He complains to the managers and they give him the dayshift. He uses this opportunity and equips the old Spring Bonnie suit to murder five more children. Freddy Fazbear (possessed by Gabriel) assisted by The Puppet (possessed by Charlie), attempted to stop William and save the children, but it is too late as Afton had already murdered them.

After murdering the extra children, Afton quietly left town. The restaurant is put on lockdown for an investigation and after opening back up, is ultimately closed down when Jeremy Fitzgerald, the night guard, got his frontal lobe bitten off by one of the animatronics.

The Sister Location[]

Sometime after 1993, Afton goes to the now-closed and abandoned Freddy Fazbear's Pizza, lures the original four animatronics to the backroom and destroys them. Taking their endoskeletons, he brings them to Circus Baby's Entertainment and Rental. Upon arriving, he melts the endoskeletons and pours the liquid into the Funtime Animatronics. After experimenting with the remnant of the souls of the missing children, Afton sells Circus Baby's Entertainment and Rental to Fazbear Entertainment.

William then sends his now-adult son Michael down to the facility to save his sister Elizabeth, who’s soul has been trapped inside of Baby. Michael obeys and ends up getting his insides taken out as the Funtime animatronics (Elizabeth and the souls of the Missing Children) use Michael’s body as a skin suit to escape the facility.

Springlock death[]

During Michael's journey, William returns to the ruins of Freddy Fazbear's Pizza to steal back his trusty Spring Bonnie costume. However, the spirits of The Missing Children notice him and start chasing him around the location. in an act of desperation, William equips the old and withered Spring Bonnie suit. His heavy breathing triggers the springlocks, causing them to make deep cuts all over his body. After this, sharp steel and hard plastic are instantly driven into his flesh. His organs get punctured and his vocal cords get severed. As William is dying, the spirits of his victims retreat back to the rental facility, leaving him to bleed out and die. Before they part ways, the children would seal up the saferoom and trap their killer inside.

William would rot in the room for decades. Sometime along the way, he rejected his identity as William Afton and accepted his current state, now going by the name "Springtrap".

Springtrap[]

In the year 2023, Springtrap is discovered by people searching for items to put into Fazbear’s Fright, a horror attraction capitalizing on the unsolved mysteries of Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza, he is put into the attraction as the main selling point of the place. Wanting to quench his thirst for blood, he attempts to kill the night guard who works there (who just so happens to be Michael Afton). Michael deters him with audio ques, which attracts the suit's noise detection. Springtrap remains in the attraction for six nights until the place burns down in a fire, which he survives.

After the Fazbear's Frights fire, Springtrap leaves and searches for more people to kill. That was when he found Freddy Fazbear's Pizza Place. Knowing that is was a trap, he went in anyway, as he couldn't turn down the offer of murdering more innocent children. Springtrap found himself in a maze of vents, with misleading audio cues. It turns out that it was Henry Emily who made the false-pizzeria. Henry also succeeded in getting Scrap Baby (Elizabeth), Molten Freddy (the original five missing children), the Puppet (Charlie) and Michael Afton. With this, Henry sets the building on fire, burning everyone. However, firefighters arrive and put out the fire.

William is then tortured by Cassidy by imprisoning his soul somewhere in the deep dark depths of the Flipside, an artificial hellscape where he fights apparitions of his past in a deadly game of cat and mouse, similar to what the night guards at Freddy's had to experience while working there.

Audio[]

As Purple Guy appears in many minigames, he makes various noises when performing different actions. The sound effects played are as follows:

Warning: Loud!
The sound played when Purple Guy charges at an animatronic to dismantle it. It also plays on the three Springtrap boot screens.

The sound played when Purple Guy is running away from the dead children. File:Scare.ogg

Trivia[]

  • Some fans have assumed that Purple Guy and Phone Guy are the same persons since they both seem to like Foxy (as evident by the fact that Purple Guy appears next to Pirate Cove in the Foxy Minigame), Purple Guy appears to be afraid of ghosts, to which The Puppet shares similar attributes, and both (seemingly) use a phone. Purple Guy also has a badge, indicating that he's a security guard, which Phone Guy once was as well.
    • This theory could be disproved by the release of Five Nights at Freddy's 3, where it was shown that Purple Guy was killed by being in Springtrap, whereas Phone Guy knew how dangerous the Springtrap suit was and likely wouldn't have worn it.
      • However, it is also possible that the raindrops leaking through the building (which are visible in the minigames) had caused the springlocks to malfunction (as Phone Guy had said that moisture would loosen them), thus resulting in his death.
    • This theory could also be disproved by the fact that Phone Guy was supposedly killed prior to the events of Five Nights at Freddy's. During this time, the animatronics were still intact and stalking Mike Schmidt. It is shown in Five Nights at Freddy's 3 that Purple Guy was killed after he had already destroyed the animatronics.
  • Occasionally, when the third game starts up, one of three images may appear of Springtrap revealing Purple Guy's rotting corpse inside of him, similarly to the eyeless Bonnie screen from the first game and the eyeless screens from the second game.
    • Upon analyzing the three images that can rarely appear when starting a night, it can be seen that Springtrap had no animatronic eyes, but instead has human eyes, though they could be Springtrap's eyes and were simply jammed into Purple Guy's skull when the spring locks failed. This can be supported by the fact that Springtrap's eyes glow, a trait quite clearly not found in human eyes.
    • Part of Purple Guy's lower jaw can also briefly be seen in Springtrap's right-side jumpscare, and while he is in sight on CAM 15.
  • With assorted parts of his flesh visible, Purple Guy is the second human character to make any sort of on-screen appearance, after Mike Schmidt (as his eyes and teeth are visible in the Game Over screen in the first game).
    • With these visible parts of his body, some discerning features can be made out in Purple Guy, such as a cleft chin.
  • At the end of night Minigames, a "Purple Freddy" (assumed by many to be Shadow Freddy from the second game) will lead the player to the room where they meet their imminent fate at the hands of Purple Guy. Furthermore, if the player restrains from following this Purple Freddy for too long, Purple Guy will come and dismember them anyway. This seems to suggest that this Purple Freddy may somehow be connected to the Purple Guy, but until more information can be gathered, no legitimate theories can be confirmed.
  • The code for Night 4's minigame in Five Nights at Freddy's 3 (395248) is the hex code of purple in reverse (#842593).
  • It is unknown why the Purple Guy is the color purple since every other human seen in the minigames looks much like real humans.
    • It's possible this was done to make Purple Guy stand out more as opposed to the other characters seen.
    • He could also be illustrated such way to hide any major details and leave him featureless.
